Sometimes I despair. But maybe I should be more understanding.

Recently, a lady friend of mine expressed to me, her pc was running extremely slow. She was seriously considering buying a new computer because of this and was prepared to spend anything from £300-£600.

Her present pc is only about 18 months old. Oh how Bill Gates must love her.

So I try to understand her, and her position.

She is single and has her own small business. She needs her computer to keep records for business. She also needs it for internet dating and keeping in touch with old friends and new via msn. A common situation I am sure.

Life is busy and she knows nothing about computers. Her only option is to buy a new computer, she believes. It's all very stressful to her.

Help is here.  What she needs is a stable computer. One which works, day after day with no problems, and is definitely NOT SLOW.

So firstly, what slows up your computer. The lack of RAM is the main culprit. Random Access Memory is your memory stick which can be easily replaced or added to. She or you, can do this yourself. For example, I have Windows XP Pro and have 1.75 GB of RAM. (GB = gigabytes). Many users may only have 256 MB (megabytes) of RAM. You can see that I have 7 times more RAM which is why my pc is quite fast. (I never ever get the egg timer come up).

Secondly, having beautiful cascading waterfalls as your Desktop Background can seriously slow up your pc. Go back to using a normal background.

Thirdly, antivirus protection, the great wonder of the 21st Century can be a big contributor to slowing up your pc. There are lots of  different brands of software out there, too many to mention. But they all do the same thing. They check for intrusions, which means the are usually running in the background which you can't see, hence slowing up your computer.

But, I hear you scream, I need my antivirus protection, because I don't want to get infected.

Believe me, I don't want to get infected either. The difference is, I KNOW I WON'T !! I have not had any antivirus protection for 4 years. I have never lost any data and never broken down !!

So what is the answer. How can my friend, or you,  have a pc that works quickly, regularly and still be safe.

One of the big hurdles to climb I have noticed is most people tend to have their towers down below somewhere. Right in the corner with all their cables strewn about, untouched for months and possibly gaining dust !

My advice is to think about making it more easily accessible. Put it up higher maybe. It definitely won't gather as much dust. Make it easier to get to.

After explaining all this to my friend she decided to buy the book.
